Gollum

Gollum’s story is tragic rather than villainous. Only briefly, while he is in his original incarnation as the hobbit, Smeagol, do we see him free from the corrupting influence of the Ring. He then murders his cousin Deagol for possession of it. Ostracised by his village, Smeagol, by then named Gollum, retreats underground in the Misty Mountains where, over hundreds of years, the Ring’s power distorts his mind and body. Gollum, ultimately, is essential to Frodo and Sam reaching Mount Doom, and he is a pathetic counterpoint to the commanding power of Sauron. His relationship to the Ring and schizophrenic personality are central to the tale of power, good and evil. Although doomed, Gollum is one of the only villains who approaches any form of redemption.
